Snack Smart with Blue Diamond Almonds

Seasalt almonds and apple 2

I travel a lot. Sometimes by air, sometimes by car. When I’m catching a 5:45 AM flight, the last thing on even my (a nutritionist’s) mind is breakfast. I know, however, that a couple hours into a flight, I’m going to be hungry. My favorite portable snack is almonds. And my favorite flavor is Sea Salt from Blue Diamond Almonds. Most roasted nuts are either too greasy, are way, way too salty, or both. These babies aren’t greasy at all and have just the perfect hint of sea salt to bring out the nutty almond flavor. While nuts are indeed a high fat food, the fat is a “healthy fat” – almost totally unsaturated. This doesn’t mean that you can eat unlimited amounts in one sitting (although they’re so good you might want to). One serving is about 24 nuts, not a shabby amount, providing 170 calories and 6 grams of protein. One serving also provides 20% of the RDA for magnesium, a mineral that aids in everything from maintaining your energy level, helping you to relax, sustaining the health of your heart and blood vessels and even alleviating constipation (think: Milk-of-Magnesia).  Add a 60 calorie apple to a serving of almonds and you’ve got some energy-filled, high fiber carbs to round out your snack, compliment your coffee or tea and get you through to your next destination where hopefully you will have time for a larger snack or meal. This snack combination is also great for a middle of the afternoon pick-me-up at your desk.

Choc almonds 3The center console of my car has been (lovingly, by my sister) referred to as “my pantry.” Where most people store a USB cable, a cell phone charger and a tire pressure gauge, I have a mini salt and pepper shaker (Himalayan pink salt, no less!), a corkscrew (don’t judge – you never know), and some kind of packaged nuts. When I am lucky, it’s two kinds: Blue Diamond Sea Salt and Dark Chocolate Almonds. These are not those almonds with the coating of dark chocolate and then the cocoa powder. No, that’s a much higher fat, higher sugar version. At only 160 calories per 24 nut serving, these almonds are a much healthier snack providing a hint of sweetness and only 4 grams of sugar! That’s a “sweet treat” I can condone on a daily basis. Plus you’re also getting the same nutrition advantages you read about above as well as 30% of your daily requirement of Vitamin E.

So the next time you’re trying to come up with a healthy, satisfying, portable, convenient snack (or emergency airplane food) think Blue Diamond Almonds. They’re dietitian-approved!
